Failing to Find Paraphrases Using PNrule
In this paper, we attempt to detect clause-level paraphrases in cases where they are extremely rare, using a combination of lexical and syntactic measures along with a machine learning algorithm designed specifically for detecting rare classes: PNrule. When our method fails, we examine the probable causes of this failure, and what they mean for future work.
متن کاملFinding Meaning in Neuroaesthetics
How might neuroaesthetics move beyond beauty and begin to study meaning? While neuroaesthetics is broadly concerned with the brain’s role in processing art, it has typically focused on perceptual preferences concerning the question of beauty. To cut deeper ontologically the field might consider exploring other basic kinds of meaningful categorical judgments people routinely make about artifacts...

In this chapter, I explore several themes in connection with a selective review of some research problems I have pursued over the years. The study of meaning is a major theme along with issues relating to the goals of scientific psychology and the demands of research on applied problems. Finally, I ponder the role of psychology in the broader scientific endeavor, and I propose a candidate for t...
متن کاملJabberwocky: Using Context Clues to Find Meaning in ‘Nonsensical Speech’
No matter what your preferred method of counting is, the average adult knows a very large number of words. Moreover, most of these words were not—and could not have been—explicitly taught to the individual. Contextual Vocabulary Acquisition (CVA) is an explanation via computational model of how these underspecified terms slip into our daily vocabulary and how to help people actively acquire the...
متن کاملFinding Meaning of Clusters
Clustering is an important data exploration task in chance discovery as well as in data mining. The first hierarchical clustering dates back to 1951 by K. Florek; since then, there have been numerous algorithms. However, there is no consensus among researchers as to what constitutes a cluster; the choice of the cluster is application-dependent. Although clustering is sometimes evaluated by inte...
